While most births occur without complications, it is comforting to know that MedStar Harbor Hospital has a Neonatal Care Unit, which offers medical monitoring and specialized care not available in a conventional nursery. Our multidisciplinary team cares for babies who are born prematurely, have a low birth weight, or have other medical complications. We want you to feel comfortable and able to ask us anything regarding your baby. Learn more about MedStar Harbor’s Neonatal Care Unit.
When a baby is born prematurely or full-term with special medical needs, he or she requires an extra level of medical attention. That’s where the expertise and caring hands of Laurel “Larry” Yap, M.D., comes in.
In the Neonatal Care Unit, Dr. Yap and his team provide care for babies born as young as 28 weeks and who weigh as little as two pounds. “We are much more than a holding nursery,” Dr. Yap explained. “We provide the medical treatment, respiratory and nutrition therapy and round-the-clock monitoring that premature and sick infants need to thrive.”

In 2015, MedStar Harbor Hospital was recognized for being committed to providing the best care for mothers and their babies by reducing the rate of premature births and decreasing the number of non-medically indicated elective deliveries and cesarean deliveries. The March of Dimes’ recognition is a reflection of our efforts, and an acknowledgment that we want women to be pregnant at least 39 weeks.
