The medical specialty related to the treatment of unexpected illness and injury is emergency medicine. It may also affect individuals of any age, from newborn infants to the elderly. Treatment most often is provided for serious injuries and illnesses, as well as illnesses not improving with home remedies.
Led by MedStar emergency physicians— recognized for clinical leadership in managing the busiest and most efficient emergency rooms in Maryland— the Emergency Department (ED) at MedStar Harbor Hospital combines medical excellence and personal attention with efficient care.
A visit to the ED can be inherently stressful for patients and their loved ones. At MedStar Harbor Hospital, we will make every effort to respect your wishes about visitation.
We generally require 20 to 30 minutes alone with a patient while we perform the initial evaluation. We make every effort to allow appropriate visits from family or friends; but because of the nature of an emergency department, we allow only one visitor per patient at a time. Visitors must be at least 16 years of age unless special arrangements have been made.
Also, please note that there may be times that visitation will be prohibited, such as FastER Care, but we will provide frequent updates to keep your visitors informed about your care and condition. We appreciate your understanding as we try to provide the best possible care for our patients in an environment that respects every patient’s right to privacy and comfort.
Patients referred to the ED by their physician via the hotline (410)-350-3535 are seen immediately upon arrival.
The Joint Commission certification recognizes our exceptional expertise handling time-critical stroke emergencies.
Our full-service, EMS-certified ED is located just off of I-95 on South Hanover St. in Baltimore and includes free parking.
Did you know that 80 percent of patients in need of emergency care drive to the hospital of their choice?
This decision can save you hours.
At MedStar Harbor Hospital, our team of board-certified professionals provides expert care, with an emphasis on maintaining patient comfort, dignity, and confidentiality. To expedite care for all patients, MedStar MedStar Harbor Hospital opened FlexCare, this area allows us to better deliver an efficient and expedited experience for patients with less emergent medical situations and further ensure that those who come to the hospital with true emergencies can be seen and treated in a timely manner. FlexCare, open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., is designed to navigate individuals to the appropriate treatment area, based upon their type of illness or injury, in and outside of the ED.
