MedStar Harbor Hospital is First Hospital in Maryland to Achieve Advanced Certification in Heart Failure by National Quality Commission
January 8, 2014
BALTIMORE—(January 8, 2014)— MedStar Harbor Hospital is the first hospital in the state of Maryland to receive advanced certification in heart failure by The Joint Commission (TJC). Awarded in conjunction with The American Heart Association (AHA), achievement of this prestigious certification signifies MedStar Harbor’s dedication to achieving long-term success in improving outcomes for patients diagnosed with and being treated for heart failure.
MedStar Harbor underwent a rigorous on-site review, evaluated for compliance with standards of care specific to TJC’s disease-specific care certification program, as well as heart failure-specific requirements. Hospitals consistent with TJC’s standards demonstrate that their services have met critical elements of performance in fostering better outcomes for heart failure patients.
“In achieving TJC advanced certification, MedStar Harbor has demonstrated its commitment to the highest level of care for its patients with heart failure,” says Jean Range, RN, CPHQ, executive director, Disease-Specific Care Certification, TJC. “Certification is a voluntary process and TJC commends MedStar Harbor for successfully undertaking this challenge to elevate its standard of care and instill confidence in the community it serves.”
In addition to advanced certification in heart failure, MedStar Harbor has also joined an elite group of hospitals in Maryland to be certified by TJC in spine and pediatric asthma care.
MedStar Harbor has joined sister hospital MedStar Union Memorial Hospital as the only hospitals in the state certified by TJC in spine care. Also earning pediatric asthma care certification, MedStar Harbor is one of only three hospitals in the state, including sister hospital MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, and one of 10 nationwide, to earn this significant distinction.
Achievement in these three mission-centric certifications demonstrates the high quality care MedStar Harbor consistently provides; the strength of our clinical programs and the caliber of the clinical teams; the quality and scope of our community outreach programs; and the overarching focus on meaningful caregiver-patient interactions.
“This is a very proud day for MedStar Harbor,” said hospital President Dennis W. Pullin, FACHE. “Thank you to the entire team. This is a special place, and the care that we give places us among the best providers in the region.”
“Third-party validation from TJC and others is immensely gratifying, but the best reward is knowing that we truly make a difference in the lives of the hundreds of thousands of community members who place their trust in us,” said Pullin.
