MedStar Harbor Hospital was named a top hospital in Maryland and the Baltimore metropolitan area in the latest rankings by U.S.News & World Report. We were specifically recognized for our performance in six areas. We received high performance ratings in four adult specialty areas: Gastroenterology and GI Surgery; Gynecology; Orthopaedics; and Pulmonology. In addition, we were ranked as high performing for treating Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Heart Failure.
The rankings are based on data from nearly 5,000 centers across the country and the scores are based on a variety of patient-outcome and care-related factors, such as patient safety and nurse staffing.

Practice Greenhealth Environmental Excellence Awards
MedStar Harbor Hospital was recently honored with the “Partner for Change” award by Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading organization for facilities committed to environmentally responsible operations.
The “Partner for Change” award recognizes healthcare facilities that continuously improve and expand upon their mercury elimination, waste reduction, recycling, and source reduction programs. At a minimum, facilities applying for this award must be recycling 15 percent of their total waste, have reduced regulated medical waste, are well along the way to mercury elimination, and have developed other successful pollution prevention programs in many different areas.
MedStar Harbor participates in an array of engagement activities and innovative programs essential to establishing and maintaining best management practices. Among the notable achievements recognized by Practice Greenhealth were the hospital’s focus on the reduction of Styrofoam use and the decreased use of regulated medical waste bags.

2015 Vitals Patients’ Choice Award
In 2015, Leigh Ann Curl, MD, was recently honored as a 2015 Vitals Patients’ Choice Award winner. Vitals Patients’ Choice recognizes top-performing doctors based on reviews and ratings collected over the past calendar year. Vitals owns the largest Patients Choice Awardcollection of online doctor reviews and only 5 percent of doctors received this award.
The March of Dimes Maryland- National Capital Area Chapter- Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait Award
In 2015, MedStar Harbor Hospital was recognized for being committed to providing the best care for mothers and their babies by reducing the rate of premature births and decreasing the number of non-medically indicated elective deliveries and cesarean deliveries. The March of Dimes’ recognition is a reflection of our efforts, and an acknowledgment that we want women to be pregnant at least 39 weeks.
Quality Excellence Award
MedStar Harbor Hospital has been awarded the Quality Excellence Award from the Delmarva Foundation for an unprecedented ninth time. We have received this prestigious award more
than any other hospital in the Delmarva area, including Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Delaware.

American Heart Association’s Fit-Friendly Worksite Award
MedStar Harbor was once again recognized as a Gold Level Recipient of the American Heart Association’s Fit-Friendly Worksites Recognition program. The Fit-Friendly Worksites program is a catalyst for positive change and worksites throughout the nation can be part of the initiative making the health and wellness of their associates a priority.

Awarded MedStar Harbor with re-certifications and Gold Seal of Approval for Stroke Care, Hip Replacement and Knee Replacement.

MedStar Harbor earned three mission-centric certifications from TJC: Pediatric Asthma Care; Spine; and Heart Failure
In 2016, MedStar Harbor Hospital received recertification for both our Pediatric Asthma Care and Heart Failure programs, with no recommendation for improvement.
In 2015, MedStar Harbor Hospital received recertification for the Pediatric Asthma Care program from TJC, with no recommendation for improvement. We are one of only nine hospitals in the nation and only three in Maryland to earn TJC Pediatric Asthma Center of Excellence recognition.
MedStar Harbor Hospital received a Pediatric Asthma Care certification from TJC, making us one of only three hospitals in Maryland and 10 nationwide to earn this distinction.
MedStar Harbor also was awarded a certification for Spine care, making us one of only two hospitals in the state to demonstrate the depth of quality spine services to merit this.
The third certification earned was for Heart Failure. As further testament to our outstanding heart care, we now can say we are the only hospital in Maryland to be certified by TJC in this specialty.

Accreditation in Adult Transthoracic Echocardiography by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC)
MedStar Harbor Hospital’s Echocardiography Lab was granted a three-year accreditation in Adult Transthoracic Echocardiography by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC). An IAC accreditation is a “seal of approval” that patients can rely on as an indication that the facility has been carefully critiqued on all aspects of its operations considered relevant by medical experts in the field of Echocardiography. This accreditation is important for MedStar Harbor and the communities we serve. Cardiovascular diseases are the No. 1 cause of death in the United States – and among the patient population we treat. Early detection and diagnosis of heart disorders and other diseases is possible through the use of Echocardiography procedures. Our third-party validated skill and expertise in these important procedures helps us to continue to provide the very best health care to the tens of thousands of patients who trust us to be a quality health partner.

Cancer Center granted three-year accreditation with commendation by the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer
The Cancer Center received the COC accreditation; a voluntary commitment by a cancer program that ensures patients will have access to a full scope of services required to diagnose, treat, rehabilitate, and support patients with cancer and their families. CoC-accredited cancer programs continually evaluate their performance and take corrective action when necessary. Accreditation is the hallmark of a program's commitment to patient-centered cancer care.

Clinical Laboratory receives two-year accreditation and validations by Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, AABB and the College of American Pathology
MedStar Harbor Hospital's Clinical Laboratory received a two-year accreditation by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) and the College of American Pathologists. The goal of the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program is to improve patient safety by advancing the quality of pathology and laboratory services through education, standard setting, and ensuring laboratories meet or exceed regulatory requirements. AABB promotes the highest standard of care for patients and donors in all aspects of blood banking and transfusion medicine. The Accreditation Program assesses the quality and operational systems in place within the facility and awards accreditation based on compliance with Standards, Code of Federal Regulations and federal guidance documents.

Emergency Department earned a five-year certification as an EMS Base Station by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems
Maryland's designated EMS Base Stations provide quality on-line medical direction to the State's EMS providers. MedStar Harbor Hospital's Emergency Department is proud to have earned a five-year certification as an EMS Base Station.
Fetal Assessment Center is accredited by the American Institute for Ultrasound in Medicine
AIUM ultrasound practice accreditation is a voluntary peer review process that allows practices to demonstrate that they meet or exceed nationally recognized standards in the performance and interpretation of diagnostic ultrasound examinations. The accreditation process encourages providers of diagnostic ultrasound services to assess their strengths
and weaknesses and initiate changes to improve their practices. Practices accredited by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) have demonstrated competency in every aspect of their operation, including: personnel Education, training and experience document, storage and record keeping policies and procedures, safeguarding patients, ultrasound personnel, equipment instrumentation quality assurance and case studies.
MedStar Harbor Hospital's Sleep Center earned a five-year accreditation from the American Board of Sleep Medicine
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine accreditation is the gold standard by which the medical community and the public can evaluate the services provided by a sleep center or lab. The standards for accreditation ensure that sleep medicine providers display and maintain proficiency in areas such as testing procedures and policies, patient safety and follow-up, and physician and staff training.
