Guardian Angel Program
Bone cancer survivor Charles Jones is grateful for his Guardian Angel: expert oncologist Gayatri Nimmagadda, M.D.
The Guardian Angel program at MedStar Harbor Hospital gives grateful patients and their families an opportunity to honor a physician, nurse, caregiver or staff member who touched their lives, making a positive impact on their hospital experience. When patients or families make a donation to MedStar Harbor Hospital in honor of their Guardian Angel, the recipient receives a card and a special lapel pin recognizing the outstanding care he or she provided.
MedStar Harbor Hospital's first Guardian Angel was Gayatri Nimmagadda, M.D. Bone cancer patient Charles Jones said, "I am blessed to have Dr. Nimmagadda caring for me. I don't worry because she knows what's best for me and is always so positive." When Jones heard about the Guardian Angel program at MedStar Harbor Hospital, he knew just whom to select. "I am overwhelmed and touched with his thoughtfulness," Dr. Nimmagadda said. "To be the first Guardian Angel is such an honor."
James and Alma Durn recommended the second and third recipients of the Guardian Angel award: Rancha Arora, M.D., and Ruth Bunolna, R.N. The Durns said that when James was a patient at the hospital, Dr. Arora "was incredibly kind and attentive" and she clearly explained all that was happening in terms they understood. They also were especially impressed that nurse Bunolna stayed with them throughout a critical period.

Emergency Department physician Andrew Bukovitz, M.D., was nominated by a patient's wife. She stated, "He listened to all of my husband's symptoms, not just the clinical ones. He realized some patients and ailments are not textbook. I can truly say that he is all a doctor should be — a perfect balance of medical technique, bedside manner and human compassion."
James Wood, M.D., chief of orthopaedics, has been named the most recent Guardian Angel. The nominating patient chose Dr. Wood because of his kind, compassionate and excellent care, stating, "Dr. Wood is one of the treasured few who have fine clinical skills coupled with sincere concern for patients. He listens and answers questions. Dr. Wood is a true healer. He is your surgeon, your friend and your encourager, quietly building your trust and confidence."
