Allan Birenberg, M.D.
Vice President of Medical Affairs
As the vice president of medical affairs at MedStar Harbor Hospital, Allan Birenberg, M.D., M.B.A., is responsible for process improvement, programmatic growth and improved patient and physician satisfaction. He also serves as a liaison between MedStar Health's senior management team, hospital president, board of directors, medical staff officers and members and department chairs.
Birenberg also operates a private practice anesthesia group, HarborView Anesthesia Associates, where he serves as president and managing partner.
Prior to joining MedStar Harbor Hospital in 1995, Birenberg served as the associate chief and head of operating room anesthesia at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, where he was responsible for the operations of a large operating room and satellite ambulatory surgery center.
Birenberg holds a bachelor's degree from Queens College of the City University of New York. He received his doctorate in medicine from Baylor College of Medicine in Texas, and later earned a master's degree in business administration from Loyola College of Maryland. His postgraduate education began at City Hospital Center at Elmhurst in New York as an internal medicine intern followed by an anesthesiology residency and cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York.
Birenberg serves on the boards of the American Board of Anesthesiology and the American Academy of Pain Management.
